Native Copper Flat
These pieces of Native Copper are from the Keweenaw Peninsula in Michigan. Copper mining in Michigan became an important industry in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Within the state of Michigan, copper is found almost exclusively in the western portion of the Upper Peninsula, in an area known as the Copper Country. Copper Country is highly unusual among copper-mining districts because the copper found here is predominantly found in the form of pure copper metal, as seen here.
Each piece is unique and varies in size shape. Two examples are provided here to illustrate how unique each piece is.
